The Breakfast Ride !!

"If you don't understand what it means to ride a Royal Enfield Bullet, then whatever written here may be felt as insane ramblings."
The effects of not following ones passion is something which makes life very boring. A long lull in group riding is something which no riding enthusiast can sustain. Ever since the cracker of a ride to the Ooty for the Rider Mania almost 1 year back, nothing was happening in the riding department. The group - Silver Bullets was showing its presence only through the occassional mails. Our group moderator's shift of his work location and an unfortunate accident to one of the most active member only prolonged the lull.

But we know something is gonna come up, but everytime something was planned, due to one reason or another everything got shifted. But against the run of events we found out a reason to ride, we wanna take some snaps of Raghu's bullet which had gone through a complete make over and we wanted to have a breakfast far away from our dwelling place, so a ride idea was born, "THE BREAKFAST RIDE"

The planning happened on one evening and next day as early as 5.00 pm Raghu and myself were thumping hard through the Thiruvananthapuram town with the meaty thumps being audible atleast a kilometer away, thanks to the city which was yet to wake up dressed up with all the bare essentials for a safe riding.

It is very hard to shoot pics during a ride, coz I get too much absorbed in the ride that I hate to stop. My camera started the days action when Raghu stopped for a petrol gulp.

We reached our designated start up point - Vellayamabalam for Anil and Sankar to join. Since Anil's bullet was not with him, he decided to join us along with Sankar, just to get a feel of the ride. It is painful for a hardcore rider to watch others ride, but something is better than nothing.

The bulls parked underneath the bright yellow coloured neon street lamps was a sight to watch.

Raghu's bull was looking really mean and I enjoyed drooling over it, the way each of the newly laid components are put in place, the level of perfection it had, it sure is a masterpiece.

The white A star with those beautiful white lights were soon near us and we were meeting our rider pals Anil and Shankar after a long gap. Exchanging pleasantaries were delayed as we decided to proceed with the ride. The plan was to ride upto Kulathupuzha, a distance of about 60kms, explore Oil Palm India Ltd if possible, have breakfast and then ride back.
The city was still sleeping but our hearts was thumping to the tune of the meaty acoustic effect produced by the bullets enhanced by the free flow exhaust, Goldie. Road development works along the Vellayambalam Peerorkada stretch had ensured that the roads provided ample oppurtunity for the rider to feel like an offroading session. Once we passed Peeroorkada, roads opened up and the small winding roads began. The moment winding roads appear, bullets began to show its character, the rock like stability in taking turns and the confidence inspiring - completely planted on road - feeling makes the rider sway the machine with absolutely effortless ease.

Raghu was leading, and I was enjoying the way his mean machine was presenting itself amidst the beautiful roads alongside the freshness imparted by the real cool morning breeze.
When everything seems so exciting, something happens which overturns expectations. Occassionally I was getting the smell of petrol and initially, thought it as a case of petrol escaping from the full filled tank. But soon I saw Raghu pulling out to a side of the road, his carb was leaking !!!

Within no time Anil swung into action, guided by tech guru Sankar's advice. The carb was opened, and found out that the leak happens when throttle was released after accelarating too much, the petrol inlet was not getting completely closed by the float during the release process, due to which more petrol was getting into the carb eventually coming out of it. The float was taken out, twisted a little, put it back, carb closed and checked for leak, still leak was not completely done away with, but since the nature of leak was understood, Raghu was confident that he could give the throttle in such a way that he can ensure that it does not happen.

After about 30 minutes of this session, we hit the roads again, with Raghu in the lead again, trying to give a continuous throttle rather than open - close method. City roads gave way to beautiful country sides and the effect of thumping through winding roads through rich dense green vegetation in the early mornings is something to be felt rather than explained.

A little after Palode a sign board pointing westward indicated the direction of Oil Palm india limited and the direction of our travel followed suite. The roads were perfect for a ride, narrow village roads, zero traffic, thick forest like ambience

It was a cloudy morning and sun was reluctant to come out and the chillness was still present.
All the while we were moving through the side road of Oil Palm India Ltd. We wanted to have a peek inside the vast property of this corporation which was known to have many beautiful spots. Finally we got to see a small road towards a hill which was just in motorable condition. The bullets were soon put into offroad mode and the fun started. Watch the roads in this place

The lack of roads made the ride more thrilling. Some stretches were good, but all along the scenery was just mind blowing.

The most interesting and exciting part of the ride was happening and we enjoyed every moment of it. Since our friends were waiting down in the main road and since Raghu had to return by 9am we decided to go back after a quick break uphill. Watch Raghu after an exhilarating ride.

Raghu's steed was subjected to a shooting spree, but the dull climate ensured that the output was not upto my expectations. Still got to learn a lot on photographing in such dull light

My pride possession and work horse was also enjoying his day out in these rough roads

Turned back and another good ride through these beautiful hill side continued. At some points the place resembled other famous hill stations like Munnar (click here to view more of Munnar)

God's own country Kerala is really amazing, coz we are just 50 kms away from Trivandrum and the place looks like an exotic hill station. After riding through for som 10 kms more through the side of Oil Palm India Ltd. we decided to turn back and proceed to Kulathupuzha, but since it was already 7.30am we decided to stop at a place before Kulathupuzha, have our breakfast and then do the return ride.

The ride back through the narrow roads towards Palode was equally interesting. The roads were lovely with those beautiful woods around

This place is truely exciting and I have to come back here again for exploring further. We did not get to see any of the oil palms except a few on the road sides.

The ride from palode to Madathara was a quickie with foot peg srapping the ground on every turns. By the time we reached Madathara, Anil's steed was waiting steered by his friend Biju. Soon Anil and Shankar to joined us and it was breakfast time.

The road side hotel at Madathara proved to be more than good, and the taste of the hot puttu & kadala, appom and egg curry surely left a lasting impression on the taste buds. Even the tea served was very tasty that almost all of had atleast 2 cups. The regular Silver Bullet meeting happened at this hotel and discussions ranging from the low end cars to the high end SUVs were being done in full swing.

By the time we came out of the hotel, it was already nearing 9am. The return ride has to be quick and soon we started our journey, through Kadakkal. The ride till MC road at Nilamel was through some tough terrain, but once we got into MC road (Main Central road) the average speeds shot up and a leisurely cruise ensured. The new bypass after Venjarammood towards kazhakoottam has made the travel to Thiruvananthapuram a lot more comfortable as it is easy on traffic. By the time I entered my home, my thirst for rides has been given a boost and such short and sweet rides is going to quench it at least a little.

SMSes were soon sent across to ensure that everyone reached back safely and it was wonderful to see that all who joined were sharing the same feelings. It was a short, it was sweet, it was energizing, it was pulverzing and above all WE GOT TO RIDE & WE THUMPED HARD, REAL HARD

Part 7-The return ride

Day 4 of this journey

As is the usual case of ride day, we overtook the alarms set in our mobiles. By 6am we were ready in our riding gear. Anil and crankie sticked to there plan for a late start owing to their ill health. So the first batch was finalized as Balan, Raghu, twinspark brothers and myself. It was 6:30 am when we finished loading our luggage on to our bulls.
One more snap of the parking lot. These bulls are going to different places of India, after sharing this space for 4 days.

We were already delayed by a good 30minutes or so from our planned start time. By this time breakfast was ready, Hence we decided to have breakfast before our start so that we can save our time for breakfast later on.

Went inside the conference room of the resort where breakfast was being served.
One snap of the scenic surroundings from this room. Slowly and steadily the natural light's intensity was increasing.

The breakfast was nice and the arrangements were neat and clean as is evident from this last snap taken at Ooty.

Overall the staying experience in Sterling resorts - Fernhill was nice. No hardships whatsoever, but the time we spent in this resort was very less, coz most of the time we were either roaming around Ooty or were at the main venue and came back late at night only to get a good sleep.
It was almost 7.15am, when we got into our bulls and started thumping out of Ooty, the ghat section was not so steep towards gudalloor, the roads were superbly maintained, with sufficient width, taking twisties in a bull amidst these scenic and beautiful roads is something of an experience, soon I found that Raghu and myself were ahead of the rest of the gang. Waited for them after some time.

Balan sir wanted to have a real leisurely ride and so did the twinspark brothers and so we decided to split once again, Raghu and myself will ride ahead with minimal stops so that we can meet our commitments later in the evening. The factor which drastically slows down our ride is the number of stops and the amount of time we take to start again. The bigger the group, the more time it will take to start after a stop unless the group is very disciplined. Cruising at high speeds is not at all a must for reaching destination early. Slow and steady progress is what is needed.

So now it was only two of us, Raghu and myself. The crusing speed through these twisties depends on riders ability to bend their rides along with their body and if one is not able to keep the ride towards the left end of the road while taking a curve, then it means that he is riding at a pace which he is not able to control and he has to slow down more while taking curves. All the time one has to ensure that the vehicle is going in the intended path. Especially since the amount of turn in some blind curves are not known, the moment we feels that we are moving towards the middle of the road, we should reduce speed.

We stopped at a view point 12 kms before Gudallur, the first of the stops in this section.

Started from this point by 8:15am,

8:30 am reached Gudalloor, turned left towards Nilambur.

The initial stretch near the Checkpost was not so good roads, but enough for a bullet to march along smoothly. What is attractive is the way these roads are covered by thick dense forests. We sure felt like we are loners wandering through another world pretty much away from the horrible traffic and we were having a feel of the real unpolluted air and enjoying the sound and color of the natural flora and fauna.

A windshield view of this stretch.

Did not get down from the bull even for taking this photo, since we decided to not have any more stops for photo shoots alone.

Soon the bad stretch of road gave way to smooth roads and the twisties got even better. This one route is a real riders paradise, the terrain is perfectly flat, the roads are well maintained, there are practically no blind curves, but there are twisties, perfect to have some fun of swinging and swaying and for the experts to scrap their footpegs. Was so much absorbed with the ride and we did not stop anywhwere in this stretch.

From here on, it was a ride based on time schedule.

10:00am Reached Nilambur. Was looking out for a place to have a refreshing cup of tea and to get updates from our other rider pals.

10:10am Stopped near teak mueseum at Nilambur where there was a tea stall.

Got updated that Balan & Twinspark brothers have passed Gudalloor, but a good 40 kms behind us. Anil, Doc and crankie has started from Ooty 1 hour back and is another 50kms behind Balan.

We enquired about the routes and the tea stall guy was of the opinion that it is better to go through pattamby, rather than going via Valancherry - kuttipuram route.

10:20am Start after the tea break. Rode through the picturesque Nilambur famous for its teak plantations. The roads are pretty good in this section with the big trees on the sides giving ample cover from the shining sun.

Turned left towards pattambi. The roads in this part were not good. Ride till pattambi was through normal bumby roads with not much scenary around.

11:15am: Reached Pattambi. Stopped for a drinks break. Had some cool drinks to cool of our body after the ride through the scorching sun with our riding gear on. After a 15 mins break, started our ride towards Thrissur via the vadakkancherry route. Had thought about taking the Guruvayoor - Paravoor route. But having gone through that route some 3 months back I had experienced the heavy traffic, badly driven private buses and narrow roads in that route. We decided to take the NH 47.

12:00pm Reached Vadakkancherry. No stopping here. The ride through these areas was not that much enjoyable owing to the heat and the traffic around. Still we continued on and on at moderate speeds in the range of 60s.

12.45pm: Reached Thrissur, Had to pass through the dense city traffic and somehow managed to reach the NH47 joining from Palghat. Stopped to fill up the bulls, meanwhile got update from Balan that he decided to wait at Pattambi for the 3rd gang to join. We updated him about our position. We decided to have another hour of riding before having lunch.
Soon the two bulls were speeding away through the NH 47, Passed chalakkudy, Angamaly, Aluva and after 1hr 15 mins came the gateway to Ernakulam

2.00pm Reached Edappally, Took the Ernakulam bypass and again postponed lunch till the bypass ends. The drinks which we had at pattambi was still giving us ample energy. Surprisingly traffic was very less, might be due to the time of the day, and being a holiday people will be taking a good afternoon nap, we thumped our way to Aroor. Once at Aroor decided to have lunch at the next good hotel. Based on our calculation we were on time and we estimated that we will reach trivandrum by atleast 6.30pm after taking a lunch break. But as is the usual case, seldom does estimates meet actuals.

2.30pm Reached Thuravur. Found a good restaurant on the left side of the highway and decided to stop over here. Parked our bulls in the shades of trees in front of the hotel where there was a kids park and pretty good space in front. But time was not good to have lunch as is the case of most of the hotels in Kerala, where the lunch menu will be exhausted by about 2pm and we had to be content with chappathis. Meanwhile got update from the other batch that they have started to ride together and has already started from Pattambi towards Guruvayoor to take the Paravoor route.

3.30pm Started from this restaurant exactly 1hr after we entered and our calculations resulted in a 6.30pm schedule for reaching our destination. This ride was one of the type where we kept our stops to minimal and practically no photo shoots at all. Most of the time we were riding our bulls and maintaining a steady speed. Stability of the bulls and the comfort which it offers to the riders results in we having no fatigue at all even after riding under the scroching sun with no tree cover in the highways.

Just outside the restaurant, I found that Raghu's bull was wobbling and my eyes straight away went to his back tyre to find that it has gone flat. By this time he had realised this and halted his bull. Pushed it out of the road and parked it. Yes another puncture, enough for our estimates to go haywire. But it is an eventuality and we need to tackle it as fast as possible. Raghu offloaded his luggage, while I quickly went back to the next junction to find a tyre shop and picked the guy back to where Raghu was waiting.
Tyre removal was quick with Raghu also helping to remove it, using the tools which he was having.
Back to the tyre shop, removed the tyre and tube, filled air into the tube, dipped it in water to see bubbles coming out of a single spot. It was a small puncture, Meanwhile I checked for the villain who caused this by scanning under the tyre. Found a good nail pierced into the tyre.
This nail was the culprit this time.

First photo after a gap of 6 hours.

While the repair was going on, one local guy came to me asked, which regiment I was working in. He mistook me as a soldier, might be due to my costume and ride hardened look. Even though I try to convince that I am not a soldier, and told him that I am coming back from a trip to Ooty, he somehow was not convinced at all and was heard saying that why should some people simply go to Ooty in a motorbike without any reason and added that our mission might be a secret and hence we may not be disclosing it. He was a retired soldier and also claimed that a soldier could easily recongnise another soldier. Anyway I did not try to convince him any further as his mind was already set and I was not going to gain anything in particular by convincing him.

The puncture was fixed, tube and tyre went back to the rim, filled up air, off goes the tyrewallah and myself back to where Raghu was waiting.

Quickly the tyre went back to where it was supposed to be. Paid the tyrewallah ,dropped him back to his shop, came back, loaded my luggage and had a look at the watch, we spent 1 hr for this repair, so the lunch break was a good 2hrs.

4.30pm. We started our journey after deciding that next stop will be somewhere after Kollam for a cup of tea. The sun was slowly getting ready to set after the hectic work for the day, Hence the ride became more comfortable.

4.45pm: Reached cherthala and that signals the end of the four lane stretch.
Soon we could feel the sea breeze and this signalled the arrival of Alappuzha.

5.20pm: Alappuzha was bidding good bye, the lack of bypass in the busy town eats up the time of long distance tourers through NH 47.

Passed Harippad and NTPC, the Harippad - Kayakulam stretch of road is always bumpy even after relaying, for reasons I am not familiar with. This bumpiness is felt more when we travel in car.

5.50pm Reached Kayamkulam. No stopping here, continued thumping and we were now proceeding as per our revised estimate of reaching destination by 7.30pm.

6.30 pm: Kollam was sighted and so was the heavy traffic. We escaped from kollam town by 6.45pm only because we were on two wheels, had we been on four wheels it may take atleast 30 to 40 minutes to escape from kollam town, lack of bypass is the reason behind this delay.

6.50pm: Stopped near Kottiyam to have a cup of tea from a road side tea stall, popularly known as "Thattukada".

7.00pm: started our final leg of journey, with next planned stop being our destination.
As we thumped along chathannoor, Paripally and attingal, the whole trip was being flashed through our minds like a dream, both of us were keeping a steady pace with one following the other.

7.45pm: Reached our respectivie homes which is hardly 1km apart much to the relief of those at home who are all always anxious whenever we go on touring in two wheels.

Got update from the other batch that they are reaching Ernakulam and are going to have dinner there. They were having a pretty relaxed ride with many photo stops and the traffic in the Guruvayoor - Ernakulam stretch was too hot to handle. Crankie decided to stay at his uncle's home in Ernakulam. Twinspark brothers and Akhil also stopped at Ernakulam since they were residents of Ekm. From there it was Anil, Balan and Doc, Who thumped their way through the NH 47 and reached Trivandrum at 12.30pm when I got a message from Anil "Look ma I am still doing good" which said it all. Went to sleep only after I got this message from Anil, confirming that all my rider pals are back home safe.

It was a pretty eventfull journey, we had experienced a lot of things during this tour,
the helping hand offered by the rider pals when in need,
the joy of thumping together where the pace of the slowest rider is the pace of the group,
Learning good riding manners from experts, by watching them in action,
Riding fast does not mean taking risks and/or rash driving,
A true doctor's responsibility to a fellow human whom he had never ever met in life and a selfless service,
meeting like minded bulletteers from all over India,
the tech mods and the amount of time spent and involvment of people in supercharging their bulls,
the cult culture of some of the hardcore bulletteers,
the busy and hectic Ooty which is fast losing its charm,
the joy of riding through one of the most beautiful and scenic roads of India - the Nilambur - gudalloor stretch.

Each journey gives a lot of memories to cherish, helps to get new friends, refresh and recharge mind for the challanges ahead in life.

It was a pretty long write up, but still I feel as if I had left out lot of things, which I might have added, if I wrote this within 1 month of this trip, which would normally never happen due to other engagements.

Now itz time to plan for the next trip...the next thumper tour...

Part 6 - Rider Mania Day # 2

Group ride @ 8:30 am, Be ready for this ride around Ooty, that was the motto when we went to sleep. But we had hardly slept for 4 hours when time was 8 am. By the time we managed to find us out of bed, it was 9.
Only crankie went for this ride.
One look through window of our room, and we stayed enjoying for some more time.

Got ready quickly and decided to join the group ride if can find them somewhere around. One more shot in front of the view from the resort.

This sure is a beautiful place.

Got out of the sterling resorts all geared up for the day ahead.

Got into our bulls and raced to the venue along with Raghu in our bulls, only to find that the group riding team was getting back to the main venue, joined them for atleast the last half a kilometer. It was an awesome sight, the whole of Ooty roads came to a standstill to allow this bunch of thumpers pass in unity. Never must have been Ooty being thumped so hard.
Just half a kilometer ride with the gang, but the experience was something to cherish.

At the entry point of the venue, back after the group ride

Once into the resorts parking lot, the madbulls - bullet club of chennai - burst crackers amidst the thump of the madbulls and the whole episode was really madbulletish and we all enjoyed.

Got a call from our rider pals that they are out in the Ooty town for a small trip around and are having breakfast now. Raghu and myself joined them for breakfast.
Parked our bulls near the hotel. The sky color was so pleasing to the eyes even from this point. Just see this snap

The sky upclose with a zoomed up shot from the above frame

After breakfast, decided to have ride around the Ooty town.
Ooty seems to have lost some of its charm owing to the density of buildings and the density of people around. Riding around Ooty is almost similar to riding through the dense traffic of any of the metros aroudn.
Went to the lakeside. This Ooty trademark train is still doing its duty

We all went out for this city ride

From left, crankie, myself, Doc and Raghu

My steed enjoying all the attention he is getting as well as the amount of work being done in the past 2 days and still raring to go.

Went inside the boatclub, and was sad to see this sight.See the vehicle density

Did some shopping from the vendors here and came back to Ooty town. See one snap taken from near the Ooty Bus stand.

It was already noon by this time, Raghu and myself decided to do some more of shopping before returning to the venue.

The sun eventhough shining brightly, did not have any impact owing to the cold climate there.

It was almost 2.30pm when we came back to the venue. The major competition had already started - "the Best Tech Modified bullet". We were stunned by the work done by some hardcore bullet maniacs. The lunch we had was just for a ritual, because we were already satisfied with the mean machines on display

A 1962 model beauty

The alcatraz

Another bull which was a strong contender for the tech mod challenge.

But after a round of questioning by the R&D chief of Castrol India who was the judge for the event, the winner was announced and we were overjoyed when one of the riders who registered on behalf of Silver bullets won the first prize. It was Anoop and the work on his super charged bull was done by Gopu, Who also rode to the event in his bull. Anoop and Gopu were friends of Balan sir who rode with him during his Leh trip last year.

The supercharged bull.

Twinspark, supercharger, monoshocks, reardisc brakes are some of the tech mods in this super charged bull.

There was this small boy who came along with his father for RM 2009, he was one of the attractions owing to the way he started his father's bull and revving it up.

Time was running away like a bullet when we were spending our time with the tech modded bullets and it was 5pm when we decided to have another round of ride together before the final party of the event kicks off.

We decided to have a photo shoot of our bulls on our way

That is Sanal on my bull

The riders for this short trip

Myself, Sanal, Doc, Anjath and twinspark

Our rides

We decided to proceed to "film shooting point", which is near a lake.

Reached the destination at about 5.45pm. There was a steep descent to reach the lake. After a round of discussions on whether to go down or not, finally decided to go down.

Started our stroll downwards between the trees.

Almost reached there

And once near the lake, it was a wonderful scene.

It would have been a great miss, had we decided not to stroll down.

It was getting darker, but could not stop clicking photos of this place where each view is picture perfect.

What if someone does a perfect jump. Sanals does the same here

The reflections of the trees on the still water and its vastness was the reason behind this place being so picturesque.

It was getting real dark by the time I clicked this picture.

It was almost 7pm when we strolled up the small hill and got into our bulls. Went straight to the resort where we stayed. Decided to pack our bags before we go for the dinner and party.

Reached the venue of the party by 8.30pm, It was time to bid goodbye to the new friends which we got during this event. It was about 9.00pm when people in our gang began restless since dinner was not served even then. We had plans for starting the ride early next morning. Even after some amount heated exchanges with the organisers dinner was still not served even by 10.00pm. So we decided to skip this ride back to our stay. Doc wanted to refill his stock of medicines, so he and balan sir went to town to find if they can find some medicines as well as some snacks for quenching our hunger. Rest of the gang rode back to our dwelling place.

Not many shops will be open at this time of the night. So we had to be content with the biscuits and bread which we had in stock. Meanwhile two of us was having some health problems. Doc gave them medicines.

We had a round of discussions on the plans for return ride. Our initial plan was to start the ride at 5.30 - 6.00 in the morning and reach tvm by 8pm or so. Since some of our members were having problem, they decided to sleep a little longer and start a little late. Raghu and myself had some engagements next day. Hence we had to start early. So finally we decided that we will ride in two batches, first batch will start at 6.00 and the second batch will start at 8.00am. After all these discussions on route plans and about the event, we all got into our beds by about 1am. It was quite an eventful day at Ooty with organisers finding it really hard to manage this big a crowd. Still I would say that they did a pretty decent job.

So it was time to dream about the ride tomorrow through the beautiful roads of gudalloor, nadukani and nilambur. Slowly we all switched to sleep mode.
